Studies show that the average person contracts about three colds per year. While there is no cure for the common cold or the flu, there are a number of steps you can take to protect yourself and your family.
Health experts offer the following prevention tips:
* Get adequate rest to keep your energy levels high. When your body is well-rested, has proper nutrition and is in good physical shape, it is better able to fight infections. Taking time each day to care for your physical and mental health will help keep your body healthy and stress-free.
* Get a flu shot. The vaccine takes about two weeks to become fully effective in your body, so prepare yourself before the season hits.
In October and November, all Wal-Mart and Sam's Club locations will offer customers flu shots, educational resources and sample products to help manage their health in the cold and flu season.
A limited number of flu shots will be administered for a nominal price at each location. Flu shots will be offered on a regional basis Oct. 22, Oct. 29 and Nov. 12.
* Eat a balanced diet to help your body stayed fueled.
* Wash your hands. Frequent washing with warm water and soap for 10 seconds to 20 seconds is one of the simplest and most effective ways to avoid catching a cold or the flu.
* Disinfect your home regularly. Clean and spray your kitchen and bathroom to kill viruses and bacteria.
* Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Germs can be transmitted through the air as well as surfaces.
