If packing everything you own and lugging boxes across the lawn during brutal, 90-degree heat is not your idea of a summer fantasy, you're not alone. According to industry statistics, nearly 10 percent of the country is preparing for one of life's most stressful events: moving.
"Summer is the busiest moving season, and this will be the busiest summer we've had in the past few years," said Brad Estrin, executive vice president of Suddath Relocation Systems, one of the nation's largest household goods transporters.
To help people alleviate the stress of moving, Suddath Relocation offers this top 10 "to-do" list.
1. Plan ahead. Begin preparing for your move at least two months ahead of time.
2. Do your research. It is important to select a reputable mover. The Internet is one of the best resources for information about moving companies. Most reputable movers are members of organizations such as the American Moving and Storage Association.
3. Discuss what recourse you have in the event that damage occurs. Industry statistics show that a claim is filed in one of every five moves.
4. Get estimates in writing. Written estimates will give you the best idea of how much the move will cost.
5. Pack smart. Save time and money by packing the non-breakable items on your own. Leave the breakable items to be packed by professional movers.
6. Be present. You should be available during the move in case the movers have any questions.
7. Unplug electronics 24 hours before the move. They should be at room temperature before being packed.
8. Tie up loose ends. Remember to submit a change of address form to the post office and cancel or transfer subscriptions, utilities and other services.
9. Get one last medical checkup at your present location. It might take time to find a new doctor or dentist after you move.
10. Get your sleep! Moves can be exhausting, and being tired and irritable won't help.
